As Kenya aims to advance towards its ambition of planting 15 billion trees by 2032, Alpha Watoto Fitness (AWF) holiday camp aligned with the presidential agenda of greening Kenya on Monday, the 13th of March 2023, by planting over 100 trees at Alpha Fitness Center (AFC) in Ngiini Village, Kitui Central.
AFC upholds the scientific research that has been tried and tested, indicating that children who regularly exercise enjoy better mental and physical health, along with stable emotional resilience, resulting in lower rates of mental illness.
According to AFC’s Managing Director, Sean Ikunga, “The planting of trees within the AFC environment is symbolic as it puts into action its name, Alpha New Beginnings, giving new beginnings to plants. This is also metaphorical, as Alpha believes in molding and maturing children from a tender age to develop constructive skills that are transferable to society.”
The MD further explained, “The best way to teach children about the environment is by assigning them to care for trees, documenting growth progress, and encouraging them to motivate each other to plant more trees.”
Kitui’s Minister for Agriculture, Dr. Stephen Mbaya, who was also present, applauded Alpha Watoto Fitness (AWF) for involving children in tree planting. He emphasized to the children that trees play a key role in restoring biodiversity, improving air quality, and addressing climate change impacts such as drought and flooding.
Dr. Mbaya also stated, “Planting a tree with your kids is a great way to teach them the importance of climate change while also becoming part of the solution.”
Parents and caregivers whose children attend AWF Holiday Camp expressed their satisfaction with the holistic approach by the Alpha Team, addressing physical, mental, emotional, social, and intellectual aspects.
One parent/carer reported; “Alpha is the FUTURE we’ve been waiting for”.
