Anzauni Clan Rejects Akamba Re-Admittance into GEMA, Calls for Grassroots Consultations

The Anzauni Clan, under the stewardship of their patron, Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli, has strongly opposed the recent decision to re-admit the Akamba Tribe into the GEMA (Gikuyu, Embu, Meru Association) alliance.

Speaking to Our reporter  the clan’s leadership, including Chairman Philip Musyoka and Secretary General Peter Mulinge, criticized the move as undemocratic and out of touch with the sentiments of the 22 Kamba clans.

Opposition to Re-admittance into GEMA

The clan leaders accused the proponents of the decision of bypassing consultation and acting in pursuit of personal political agendas. “This decision was made in secrecy and does not reflect the will of the Kamba people,” said Dr. Muli. They warned that re-aligning with GEMA could threaten the Kamba community’s unity and undermine its cultural and political autonomy.

Their remarks followed an announcement on November 27, 2024, during a church service at All Saints Cathedral by allies of Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, declaring the re-admittance of the Akamba Tribe into GEMA. Notably, neither Kalonzo nor Gachagua was present, which fueled speculation and backlash within the community.

“A Selfish Political Agenda”

Dr. Muli and the Anzauni leaders have described the decision as a “selfish agenda” spearheaded by elites seeking to bolster their political survival. They argued that such significant decisions should not be made without extensive consultation with grassroots leaders, clergy, and other key stakeholders. Chairman Philip Musyoka echoed this sentiment, declaring, “The destiny of the Kamba Tribe cannot be auctioned off for political expediency.”

A Growing Divide in Ukambani

The controversy has further intensified debates about Kalonzo Musyoka’s leadership and his political strategy ahead of the 2027 elections. Critics, including those within the Wiper Party, have accused him of seeking refuge in GEMA as a means of consolidating power. This has led to growing dissent, with many questioning whether Kalonzo still has the clout to unite the Kamba community.

The Way Forward

The Anzauni Clan has called on Kamba tribesmen to reject the GEMA alignment and urged for an urgent consultative meeting to deliberate on the community’s future. “We must chart our own path as a tribe and ensure that decisions are made with the consensus of the people,” said Secretary General Peter Mulinge.

A Crossroads for the Kamba Tribe

The re-admittance into GEMA has sparked a fiery debate over whether it represents an opportunity for broader political alliances or a potential threat to the Kamba Tribe’s identity. For now, the Anzauni Clan remains steadfast in its opposition, promising to lead the fight for transparency, consultation, and the preservation of the community’s heritage.
