The Catholic Diocese of Kitui marks the 23rd death anniversary of the late Bishop William Dunne on March 31, 2025. Bishop Dunne, the first bishop of the diocese, was a dedicated missionary whose motto, “Your Kingdom Come,” reflected his unwavering commitment to spreading the Gospel. Born on June 7, 1920, in Delvin, Ireland, he joined the St. Patrick’s Missionary Society in 1938 and was ordained a priest on December 18, 1944. His journey of service in Kitui began with his appointment as the Apostolic Prefect in 1956, and later, on November 16, 1963, he was appointed Bishop of Kitui.
His episcopal ministry was marked by dedication to the growth of the diocese and the formation of local clergy. He was consecrated as a bishop on February 9, 1964, in Mullingar Cathedral, Ireland, and installed at St. Patrick’s Church, Mutune, on April 26 of the same year. Throughout his tenure, he ordained 25 priests, including notable figures such as the late Archbishop Boniface Lele and Fr. Peter Muema. Bishop Dunne faithfully led the diocese until his resignation was accepted on November 16, 1995, upon reaching the retirement age of 75. His leadership paved the way for his successor, Fr. Boniface Lele, ensuring continuity in the diocese’s mission.
As we commemorate his life and service, we give thanks for the tremendous impact he had on the Catholic Diocese of Kitui. His missionary zeal, pastoral leadership, and commitment to the local church left an enduring legacy. We remember him alongside the St. Patrick’s Missionary Society, his family, and friends, celebrating his dedication to faith and service. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
