Business activities in Mutomo town have surged over the past four days, from Sunday, June 2, to Wednesday, June 6, coinciding with a visit from Charlene Ruto, daughter of President William Ruto. Charlene Ruto’s presence in the town drew significant attention and visitors, leading to increased economic activity in various sectors.
She stayed at the residence of East Africa Community, ASALs, and Regional Development Cabinet Secretary Hon. Penina Malonza, engaging in community activities that had a positive ripple effect on local businesses.
During her stay, Charlene Ruto distributed over 3,000 leather shoes to pupils in 20 different primary schools, a gesture that underscored her commitment to community service. Partnering with Victor Kiprono, the CEO of the Zero Bare Foot Campaign, she also mentored pupils, danced, and planted trees.
Her dynamic involvement in these activities attracted many visitors to Mutomo, contributing to the town’s bustling atmosphere. Her efforts were warmly received, earning her the Kamba name “Mwende,” meaning “the loved one.”
The influx of visitors and heightened activity brought significant economic benefits to Mutomo. Restaurants and guest rooms reported increased patronage, while boda boda (motorcycle taxis) and matatu (minibus) transport services saw a spike in demand.
Goat sellers, bars, and petrol stations also experienced a boost in business, as the town accommodated over 200 visitors. This surge provided a much-needed boost to the local economy, demonstrating how high-profile visits can positively impact small towns.
