Peter Ketonya Musya, the Chief Officer in charge of Transport and the Boda-boda Sector, has taken a significant step towards enhancing the welfare of Kitui’s boda-boda community by launching a new office in Kitui Township Ward.
This facility aims to serve as a central hub where boda-boda riders can address their challenges, engage in sports, and handle issues related to their Saccos. Furthermore, the office is intended to foster unity among the township’s boda-boda operators by providing a space for open discussions and interactions, rather than holding informal roadside meetings. Ketonya emphasized his commitment to ensuring that all boda-boda operators have an organized space to raise and address their concerns with the relevant authorities.
During the office launch, Chief Officer Ketonya highlighted his dedication to improving safety and accountability within the boda-boda sector. Recognizing the insecurities boda-boda riders often face, he encouraged operators to practice self-vigilance by keeping a close watch on their peers. For example, he suggested that riders take photos of any new passenger, and if any operator is delayed, their colleagues should follow up to ensure their safety.
By taking these proactive measures, riders can contribute to their own safety while also deterring criminal activities within the community. Ketonya assured the operators that his office is working in close collaboration with local security teams to further strengthen their security as they carry out their duties.
In addition to establishing the new office, Ketonya has spearheaded the construction of boda-boda shades across Kitui’s 40 wards. In Phase 1 of this project, 20 shades have already been built, with another 20 planned for construction in Phase 2.
These shades are meant to provide shelter and resting spots for riders, ensuring they have a place to wait comfortably for passengers, rain or shine. By creating designated areas for boda-boda activities, these shades also contribute to an orderly and professional image for the sector, helping to instill pride among the riders and boost public confidence in their services.
The boda-boda sector plays a vital role in Kitui’s economy and community, providing affordable transportation to residents and creating livelihoods for countless young people. However, riders frequently face insecurities, including theft and the risk of carrying potentially dangerous passengers. This new office and the accompanying safety initiatives mark a step forward in protecting the operators and addressing their daily challenges.
By uniting the operators, enhancing their safety, and providing structured spaces, Ketonya is helping to uplift Kitui’s boda-boda sector, positioning it as a more organized and valued part of the community.
