On Thursday, May 23, 2024, Hon. Penina Malonza, the Cabinet Secretary for East African Community (EAC), Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs), and Regional Development, held a meeting with representatives from the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM).
The delegation was led by the association’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Anthony Mwangi, and included other key stakeholders from the manufacturing sector.
The discussions aimed to address significant issues affecting trade and manufacturing in Kenya, particularly within the context of the East African Community.
The meeting was also attended by Mr. Abdi Dubat, the Principal Secretary for the East African Community. Together, the officials and KAM representatives explored various challenges and opportunities that impact the trade and manufacturing sectors.
Topics included enhancing trade relations within the EAC, reducing trade barriers, and creating a conducive environment for manufacturing growth. The deliberations underscored the importance of a collaborative approach to regional development and economic integration.
One of the central themes of the discussion was the association’s Manufacturing Priority Agenda for 2024. The agenda outlines key strategies and goals aimed at bolstering the manufacturing sector in Kenya.
Participants examined how these priorities align with the broader objectives of the EAC, identifying areas where Kenyan manufacturers could benefit from increased regional cooperation.
They emphasized the need for policies that support innovation, competitiveness, and sustainability in manufacturing.
Furthermore, the meeting highlighted the potential for the Kenyan manufacturing sector to drive socio-economic progress not only for Kenya but for other EAC member states as well.
By leveraging the regional market, manufacturers can scale up production, access new markets, and contribute to economic stability and growth. The collaborative spirit and strategic planning discussed in this meeting are expected to pave the way for enhanced trade relations and a more robust manufacturing sector in the EAC region.
