Kitui County Women Representative, Dr. Irene Kasalu, recently presided over the issuance of Uwezo Fund cheques to various groups in Kitui Central Constituency. The event saw over 30 groups benefit from the funds, with a total of Ksh 3.4 million being disbursed. Speaking during the occasion, Dr. Kasalu praised the initiative for empowering women, youth, and persons living with disabilities, enabling them to access capital to start or expand their businesses. The cheques were handed over to representatives of the groups in a ceremony held at the Kitui Central CDF offices , marking a significant milestone in the county’s effort to uplift marginalized communities.
The Uwezo Fund, which was established to provide interest-free loans to these groups, has created opportunities for growth, especially for small and micro-enterprises. Dr. Kasalu noted that the fund, being a revolving one without interest, provides an affordable option for many who may not have access to conventional bank loans. She urged the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely by investing in sustainable businesses that would not only improve their livelihoods but also create job opportunities for others in the community.
Dr. Kasalu further highlighted the importance of financial literacy, emphasizing that successful business management is key to ensuring that beneficiaries can repay the loans, allowing more groups to benefit in the future. She promised to continue advocating for the fund’s expansion to reach more groups across the county. Additionally, she encouraged group members to regularly attend training sessions organized by Uwezo Fund officers to help them make informed financial decisions and grow their businesses.
The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the financial support and the ongoing mentorship they receive through the Uwezo Fund. Many shared stories of how the fund had positively impacted their lives, with some now running thriving businesses that provide stable incomes for their families. The issuance of the cheques marked a renewed hope for economic empowerment and self-reliance for Kitui Central residents.
