Professor of Neuroscience Dr. Sheila Kalunga Ikunga, the CEO of Alpha Apartments, officially launched the Alpha Judo Club in Kitui. The event, held at the Alpha fitness centre near Ngiini Secondary School in Kitui Township, Kitui Central, was attended by notable dignitaries, including former Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya (2011-2016), Dr. Willy Mutunga. The launch coincided with the Alpha Watoto Fitness End-Year Party, creating a celebratory atmosphere for the milestone event.
In her speech, Dr. Sheila Kalunga Ikunga emphasized the broader purpose of the initiative, stating, “The purpose of this is to first occupy children and young people with activities that are meaningful, as well as keep them away from activities that may be harmful for them. The counteract effect of that is that our children will have good mental health, a sense of community, and a sense of achievement. In the long run, our children will have achieved their purpose and tapped into talents they don’t know they have. This is also not just a sport but a way of life that fosters morality, patience, and confidence.”
Kenya Judo Federation President, Mr. Shadrack Maluki, lauded the initiative, noting its potential to nurture and scout for talent. He remarked, “This club is going to help significantly in developing talent and scouting for opportunities. Many kids here at Alpha Centre will not only enjoy the sport but also build careers. As you know, sports nowadays is an industry, and this initiative will keep children away from harmful activities while creating future opportunities.”
Alpha Fitness Centre, which launched in May 2023, is now fully operational and dedicated to promoting health, discipline, and community engagement.
