Kitui West youth leader and founder of the Vincent Munyoki Foundation, Dr. Vincent Munyoki, urged locals to openly share their mental health struggles during the 61st Madaraka Day celebration held at Kauwi grounds, Kitui West Sub County.
He emphasized that addressing mental health issues is crucial to preventing the rising cases of suicide. Dr. Munyoki highlighted that mental health is a pervasive problem across Kenya, and proactive measures must be taken to avert unnecessary deaths.
Dr. Munyoki expressed deep concern about the alarming trend of suicide, particularly among youths. He linked these tragedies to mental health challenges, primarily stemming from depression and familial pressures.
During his address, he underscored the importance of community support and the need for open dialogue about mental health issues to combat this growing crisis.
Further stressing the urgency of the matter, Dr. Munyoki committed to collaborating with the National Government Administration (NGAO) to enhance service delivery and improve livelihoods in the region.
He praised President William Ruto’s administration for recognizing the value of youth by appointing them to powerful positions. This acknowledgment, he believes, should extend to mental health support for young people facing immense pressures.
Dr. Munyoki encouraged the youth, especially young men, to voice their struggles and seek support. He advocated for involvement in social groups and sports activities as effective ways to alleviate stress and gain guidance. By engaging in these community activities, individuals can find relief and support, fostering a healthier environment.
Highlighting the critical need for professional mental health services, Dr. Munyoki called for more qualified professionals to help those affected by mental health issues. The rise in mental health problems, he noted, demands a robust response to provide victims with the necessary tools to overcome their challenges. His foundation’s commitment to this cause reflects a broader societal need to prioritize mental health and ensure that no one suffers in silence.
