Residents of Kitui South in Kitui County are intensifying calls for the arrest of their MP, Dr. Rachael Kaki Nyamai, over allegations of significant corruption and misappropriation of constituency resources through clandestine operations. Their demands come after shocking revelations from the Auditor General’s report, which exposed massive financial irregularities in the management of the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF). The report uncovered unsupported bursary disbursements, idle project funds, and questionable financial transactions, raising serious concerns about embezzlement and misallocation of public resources.
The residents’ anger has been further fueled by the recent arrest of Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations of embezzling county funds. Inspired by this action, Kitui South locals are now urging EACC and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to take swift action against MP Kaki Nyamai and her key CDF officials. Among those they want subjected to a lifestyle audit are A.I.E Holder Denis Matundura, Sub-County Accountant Nicholas Wambua, NGCDFC Florence Martin, and Stephen Muliki, whom they accuse of being complicit in financial mismanagement.
The Auditor General’s report highlights Kshs.26.7 million in bursary disbursements that lack proper documentation, meaning there is no proof that deserving students actually received these funds. Additionally, Kshs.1.6 million allocated to Project Management Committees (PMCs) has remained idle for over a decade, with some funds dating back to the 2013/2014 financial year. Shockingly, despite the 2023-2028 Development Plan emphasizing education and infrastructure, many long-established schools in the constituency remain underfunded and neglected.
One of the most glaring cases of marginalization and neglect is in Mutha and Kanziko wards, where none of the 16 established secondary schools have a school bus. This has made it extremely difficult for students and teachers to travel for educational and sporting events, creating a risky and costly burden on schools. In contrast, newer schools in other wards have received buses, leading residents to believe that this discrimination is intentional, aimed at undermining education opportunities for students in these specific areas.
Further investigations by whistleblowers have revealed a well-orchestrated corruption scheme, where MP Kaki Nyamai is accused of issuing open CDF cheques and instructing recipients to cash them at various banks, only to return half the amount. Reports indicate that over 20 documented cases involve fraudulent companies and individuals being used as conduits to siphon off funds meant for critical projects, including schools, bursaries, roads, and water supply initiatives. Additionally, over Kshs.2 million meant for a constituency sports tournament was squandered, despite an allocation of Kshs.1.5 million for the tournament and Kshs.500,000 for a regional sports event—yet no such tournaments ever took place.
With millions of shillings unaccounted for and key development goals unmet, Kitui South residents are growing increasingly frustrated. They argue that while the NG-CDF was designed to uplift local communities, it has instead become a cash cow for corrupt politicians and their allies. Many now question whether their constituency will ever see meaningful progress or remain trapped in a cycle of corruption, failed leadership, and systemic neglect.
Residents demand that EACC and DCI to investigate and prosecute those responsible for plundering public funds. With similar corruption crackdowns happening in other counties, Kitui South locals are hopeful that action will be taken to restore accountability and transparency in the management of public resources. The constituency now awaits a definitive response from anti-corruption agencies, as the people refuse to sit back and watch their future stolen by greedy and corrupt leaders.
