On Sunday, 26th February 2023 Azimio La Umoja People’s Baraza toured Kitale in Trans Nzoia county.
Endau/Malalani MCA Dr Erastus Mbuno speaking at Kitale stated that as youthful MCA joins hands with all university students to ensure NO fees increasement in universities in Kenya.
“Mimi kama kijana wa Kenya nasikia kwamba Serikali iliyoko inapanga kuongezea ati karo ya university. Vijana wa Kitale mtakubali iyo? Walikuja hapa wakatundanganya ati kwamba tuwapatie kura watashughulukia masilai ya watu wachini. Wakiongezea karo iende juu Kuna kijana ataenda university kweli?” He said.
He also revealed that he left his doctor’s job and Joined politics after the he realized that elders don’t give opportunity to youths in leadership.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino said he will mobilise University students across all the 47 counties to fight for their rights.
The lawmaker said he won’t assure the head of state whether the demonstrations will be peaceful or not but he will rally the learners to take to the streets.
“Learners should be out to fight for their rights,” the outspoken youthful MP said.
The government issued a directive to increase the fee from the current sh16,000 to sh48,000. This came after the High Education Loans Board subsides were removed.
The working party proposes a threefold increase in the fees paid by government-sponsored students in Kenyan universities from current Ksh.16, 000 to Ksh.52, 000 per semester.
While advocating for the fee increment, the taskforce is also asking the government to increase its funding of education at university level, which currently falls below the institutions’ needs.
