The sudden and tragic death of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Francis Ogolla has shocked the nation of Kenya. President William Ruto announced the unfortunate incident, revealing that a military chopper carrying General Ogolla and other senior KDF officials crashed in the Sindar area, at the border of West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet Counties.
The helicopter had taken off from Cheptulel Boys Secondary School before the accident occurred. Sadly, General Ogolla was among the nine military officials who lost their lives in the crash. Two survivors were airlifted to Nairobi for urgent medical care.
“Today, at 2:20pm, our nation suffered a tragic air accident in Sindar area, Keben location, Tot division, in Elgeyo Marakwet County. I am deeply saddened to announce the passing on of General Francis Omondi Ogolla, the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces,” he said.
General Ogolla was appointed as the Chief of Defence Forces by President Ruto on April 28, 2023, succeeding General Francis Kibochi. Before his appointment as CDF, Ogolla had served as the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces. He was sworn into office at State House Nairobi on April 19, with President Ruto praising his distinguished career and expressing confidence in his leadership.
The nation mourns the loss of a dedicated and esteemed military leader, and our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this tragedy.
“I convey my deepest condolences to all families that are grieving this untimely loss, and our mourning nation as well. I also wish quick recovery to the two injured soldiers in this accident who are now in accident,” stated the President.
