Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has launched the FY2024/2025 Pro Poor Fees Support Programme to assist bright but needy learners across the county. The initiative, which targets 9,433 beneficiaries, aims to ease the financial burden of education for learners from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This program covers all educational levels, including secondary schools, tertiary institutions, vocational training centers, technical colleges, universities, and special needs education. The launch underscores the governor’s commitment to making education accessible to all residents of Kitui.

The selection of beneficiaries was conducted through a transparent public participation process. Public barazas held across the county allowed community members to identify deserving students. This participatory approach ensures fairness and inclusivity, ensuring that the funds are allocated to the most deserving learners. It also reflects Governor Malombe’s dedication to involving the community in decision-making processes for impactful and equitable governance.

During the launch, Governor Malombe emphasized the critical role of education in socioeconomic development. He reiterated his administration’s view of education as a fundamental human right and a powerful tool for poverty reduction, gender equality, and peaceful coexistence. He noted that investing in education goes beyond financial support, as it nurtures future leaders, innovators, and thinkers who will drive the county’s growth.

The governor also encouraged the youth to embrace vocational training opportunities offered by the county. He highlighted the importance of equipping young people with technical and entrepreneurial skills to meet the demands of the job market and foster self-employment. Vocational training centers (VTCs) have become a priority area for the county, given their potential to create sustainable livelihoods and reduce unemployment rates among the youth.

Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) who attended the event lauded the governor’s commitment to education. They pledged to support the program and collaborate with his administration in implementing initiatives to boost learning outcomes in the county. The launch of the Pro Poor Fees Support Programme is a testament to Governor Malombe’s leadership and vision to make education a cornerstone of Kitui’s development agenda.
