The Kitui seed distribution exercise, led by Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, the CECM for Agriculture and Livestock, aims to support farmers in mitigating the impacts of climate change. The County Government is distributing Drought Tolerant Seeds, including Green grams, Cow peas, and Soghurm, to help farmers build resilience against long dry spells.
Speaking today when he led the exercise in Kivou and Mui Wards of Mwingi Central Sub County, the CECM said the County Government is distributing Drought Tolerant Seeds to farmers across the county to help them mitigate the adverse effects of drought.
“We are distributing Drought Tolerant Seeds(Green grams, Cow peas and Soghurm) to help build the communities resilience to withstand long dry spells” he said.
This initiative is part of Governor Dr. Julius Makau Malombe’s efforts to increase agricultural production and ensure food security in the county. The CECM also stressed the importance of farmers forming cooperatives to aggregate their produce, which would enable them to negotiate better prices and maximize their benefits.
Overall, 45,000 farm families are expected to benefit from the distribution of 95 metric tonnes of certified seeds.
