Kitui County’s boda boda riders have a reason to celebrate as the Ministry of Roads, Public Works, and Transport continues its efforts to improve the sector. The county has been rolling out boda boda shades across various wards, providing much-needed shelter for operators. These shades not only protect riders from harsh weather conditions but also serve as designated resting spots, creating a more organized and professional working environment. This initiative aligns with Governor Malombe’s 16-sector agenda, The Kitui Promise, which aims to enhance infrastructure and transport services across the county.
Beyond infrastructure, the county government has also been investing in the professionalization of the boda boda sector. In December 2024, the ministry trained 440 boda boda operators in a comprehensive program aimed at improving road safety and service delivery. As part of this initiative, smart driving licenses were issued, reinforcing the county’s commitment to safe and regulated transport. These efforts reflect a broader strategy to empower riders while enhancing their role in Kitui’s economic development.
At the same time, the county has made significant strides in road infrastructure. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Roads received a newly acquired grader to strengthen the county’s road maintenance efforts. County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Roads, Eng. Reuben Itiko, emphasized that improving the road network remains a key priority under The Kitui Promise agenda. With this latest addition, the county now operates seven graders, a milestone that will enhance road accessibility and connectivity.
Chief Officer for Transport and Boda Boda, Peter Ketonya Musya, highlighted the grader’s crucial role in expanding the county’s road network. He noted that better-maintained roads would improve transport efficiency and safety, benefiting both boda boda riders and the general public. The county’s continued investment in transport infrastructure underscores its dedication to economic growth and improved livelihoods for residents.
