Kitui county government has begun the process of unclogging drainage systems in Kitui municipality. This, according to the county government, is meant to avert flooding, waterborne diseases and other potential disasters.

Speaking while leading in waterway and drainages unblocking exercise in Kalundu shopping centre in Kitui municipality, Kanani said the county administration would leave nothing to chance in preparing the residents for the expected above normal rains. “As a county government we are taking all the necessary precautions, including unclogging of drainage systems in urban areas and proper garbage management, to forestall possible flooding and outbreak of water-borne-diseases,” said DG Kanani.

At the same time, due to the heavy rainfall there is a possibility of population displacements, backflows and overflows in water bodies as well as incidences of drowning and damage to infrastructure.

The Deputy Governor was accompanied by Area MCA Mr Daniel Ngoima, Mr Fred Kimanga, CECM Lands and Urban Development, Eng. Reuben Itiko, CECM for Roads, Public Works and Boodaboda, Ms Francisca Kyui, Chief Officer for Performance Contracting and Disaster Management, Mr Evans Mutemi the Chief Officer for Urban Development, Kenya Red Cross officials from Kitui branch and Kitui Town Municipality officials.
