The County Government of Kitui has joined forces with the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) to provide free cancer screenings in Kitui South Sub-County. This week-long initiative, spearheaded by Chief Officer for Public Health Lynn Kitwan, is taking place in Ikanga, Mutomo, and Ikutha hospitals.
To reach remote communities, outreach services are being offered in hard-to-reach areas such as Kwa Song’e village. The goal is to ensure that even those in the most isolated locations have access to these essential health services.
On Tuesday, July 9, 2024, C.O. Kitwan visited the hospitals involved to oversee the exercise. She emphasized that the program is designed to make cancer screening services accessible to the community, addressing a critical healthcare need in the region.
Kitwan highlighted that the partnership with CMMB underscores Kitui County’s commitment to improving healthcare services and ensuring that residents receive quality healthcare. This collaboration represents a proactive approach to healthcare, particularly in the early detection and treatment of cancer.
Kitwan stressed the importance of early detection in the fight against cancer, stating that timely diagnosis is key to effective treatment and improving survival rates. She noted that through this partnership with CMMB, the county aims to reach as many people as possible with vital screening services.
The initiative covers various types of cancer screenings, including but not limited to breast, cervical, and prostate cancer. By offering these services, the program aims to identify cancer cases early, thereby enhancing treatment outcomes and saving lives.
The collaboration between Kitui County and CMMB marks a significant step towards combating cancer and improving public health in the region. This initiative not only provides immediate health benefits but also raises awareness about the importance of regular screenings and early detection.
It reflects a broader effort by the county administration to address healthcare challenges and improve the overall well-being of its residents. More screenings are expected to be offered across the county in the coming weeks, expanding the reach and impact of this vital program.
In addition to the community-wide screenings, a similar exercise was conducted for Kitui County staff at the Kitui County Referral Hospital. This demonstrates the county administration’s dedication to the health of its employees and underscores the importance of preventive healthcare measures.
By prioritizing the health of both its residents and its workforce, Kitui County is setting a strong example of comprehensive public health management and proactive healthcare initiatives.
