On Tuesday 20th August 2024, Kitui Chief Officer for Agriculture and Fisheries, Madam Gladys Kivoto, presided over a event marking the official handover of the registration certificate and the launch of member registration for the Tseikuru Ward Farmers Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited in Mwingi North Sub-County.
Over 400 farmer groups gathered for the event, signifying the broad interest and participation in the Sacco, which promises to enhance the economic stability of the agricultural community in the region.
During her remarks, Madam Kivoto emphasized the transformative power of the newly launched Sacco in reshaping the economic landscape of Tseikuru Ward and the larger Mwingi region. She stressed that the Sacco is more than just a registration but a strategic tool for collective savings, borrowing, and investment that will empower farmers to improve their productivity and financial stability.
“This Sacco is not just a piece of paper or a registration number. It represents a unified front where farmers can collectively save, borrow, and invest,” Kivoto asserted.
As the Emergency Locust Response Program (ELRP) draws to a close this December, Madam Kivoto urged farmers to take advantage of the Sacco’s structure to gain better access to loans, invest in modern farming techniques, and position themselves for future benefits, including matching grants under the forthcoming National Agricultural Value Chain Development (NAVCD) Project.
She highlighted the importance of unity among farmers, emphasizing that working together within the Sacco would open doors to resources that would otherwise remain out of reach.
The event, which also saw the attendance of Mr. Musomba, the Director of Cooperatives, ELRP officers, and the local Ward Administrator, underscored Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s commitment to empowering farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural practices across Kitui County.
The launch is expected to be a cornerstone in driving economic growth and improving livelihoods for the agricultural community in Tseikuru and beyond.
