On Monday, 18th August 2025, the Kitui County Ministry of Health and Sanitation welcomed the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Amref Health Africa, UNICEF, Akros, and the Kenya Red Cross for a five-day joint supervision and outreach program under the Saving Lives and Livelihoods Initiative (SLL).
Running from 18th to 22nd August 2025, the program seeks to strengthen local health systems, expand immunization coverage, and advance the One Health approach by integrating human, livestock, and environmental health services.
The week-long exercise kicked off with a courtesy call to the county leadership, including CECM for Agriculture and Livestock Dr. Stephen Kimwele Mbaya, CECM for Environment Richard Mwendandu, Chief Officer for Public Health and Sanitation Lynn Kitwan, Chief Officer for Livestock and Apiculture Jonathan Kyambi, among other sector heads.
Speaking during the courtesy call, Chief Officer Lynn Kitwan underscored the importance of partnerships and cross-sector collaboration in improving health outcomes. She said the initiative reflects a collective commitment to safeguarding the health of communities through a holistic One Health approach that leaves no one behind.
Amref Health Africa Team Lead, Mary Mathenge, echoed these remarks, stressing that the initiative demonstrates the power of partnerships in strengthening local health systems, delivering quality services, and building resilience against future health threats.
Throughout the week, the program will focus on enhancing healthcare worker capacity, expanding immunization outreach, and supporting integrated health interventions across selected sub-counties. The initiative will conclude on 22nd August with a debrief session to review achievements, challenges, and lessons learned to guide future action.
