Former Cabinet Secretary for EAC, ASALs and Regional Development, Hon. Peninah Malonza, has intensified efforts to curb water scarcity in Kitui East with the distribution of an additional 54 water tanks and 172 polypots to local households.

The latest allocation marks the third phase of her ongoing “Kila Nyumba Itangi” programme, solidifying Kitui East as the biggest beneficiary of the initiative. To date, the constituency has received a cumulative 130 water tanks and 172 polypots, placing it ahead of all other regions in both this batch and overall distribution.

Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Malonza hailed women SACCOs across Kitui East for their commitment and collaboration, noting that their active participation has accelerated the fight against household water shortages. She said the distribution comes at an ideal time as the long rains begin, allowing families to harvest and store adequate water for domestic and agricultural use.

With demand for tanks increasing countywide, the former CS urged both the national and county governments alongside well-wishers and development partners to support the programme to reach even more households. She emphasized that investing in water storage is key to building climate resilience and improving livelihoods.

Since its launch in September 2024, the “Kila Nyumba Itangi” initiative has delivered 550 water tanks and 1,200 polypots across Kitui. Beneficiaries say the project has transformed their lives, enabling them to set up kitchen gardens, raise poultry, and run small businesses using the time saved from long water treks.

Women leaders in Kitui East expressed gratitude to Hon. Malonza for her ongoing support and vowed to rally behind her gubernatorial bid in the 2027 elections.
