The Kitui County observed this year’s World Donkey Day on Friday, May 17, 2024. The event took place at the Kabati Market within the county’s Kitui West District where it had been organised by the Brooke East Africa, the Caritas Kitui, the Vincent Munyoki Foundation and the Kitui County government among others.
The Kitui County Agriculture and Livestock Development Minister, Dr. Stephen Kimwele Mbaya, was the chief guest at the function.
Globally, the day is observed on May 8 every year. The event’s attendees were addressed by Minister Mbaya and the Vincent Munyoki Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Vincent Munyoki among others. The leaders at the function stressed the importance of taking care of the donkeys.
The donkey belongs to the equine family. It is one of the most resilient and respected animals in the equine family. The animal has its origin in Africa. The donkeys have been used for thousands of years to carry goods. They are celebrated for their invaluable contributions.
On Wednesday, February 21, 2024, the African heads of state banned the slaughter of the donkeys across the continent. Hundreds of thousands of the donkeys had been slaughtered in the continent.
