The Kitui County Ministry of Health and Sanitation has urged all residents to be cautious and take necessary preventive measures following a recent cholera outbreak in some parts of the country. This comes as a warning to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Kitui residents amidst fears of the disease spreading due to increased human movement across counties.
According to the national Ministry of Health, the cholera outbreak has so far been reported in Migori, Kisumu, and Nairobi counties. As of April 6th, 2025, a total of 97 cases have been confirmed, with six people losing their lives. Although Kitui County has not recorded any case of cholera yet, health officials emphasize that the risk of infection remains high.
Cholera is a dangerous disease caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae, commonly spread through contaminated food or water. Its symptoms include severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration, which can quickly become life-threatening without prompt treatment.
To prevent the spread of cholera, residents are advised to maintain high standards of hygiene. This includes regularly washing hands with soap and clean water, drinking only boiled or treated water, practicing proper food hygiene, and using clean toilets. Anyone experiencing symptoms like diarrhea or vomiting is encouraged to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility. The county health department further urges residents to stay alert and adhere to all health guidelines to keep Kitui County cholera-free.
