Kitui Ministry of health and sanitation has announced that a public notice regarding the disposal of unclaimed bodies currently lying at Kitui County Referral Hospital and Mwingi Level 4 Hospital.
According to information seen by Hopkin Reporter from the Department of Public Health and Sanitation, the notice is expected to be displayed on all official noticeboards, including those at sub-county headquarters and ward offices and radio mentions to ensure widespread public awareness and to reach more people.
The notice, dated April 17, 2025, lists a total of 32 unclaimed adult bodies and 25 foetuses, with relatives urged to come forward within ten (10) days to claim them. Failure to do so will result in the county proceeding with disposal in accordance with the Public Health Act Cap 242 and related regulations.
Chief Officer for Public Health and Sanitation, Lynn Kitwan in an exclusive interview with Hopkindigital.com emphasized the importance of the dissemination process, noting that it ensures transparency and gives families a final chance to identify and collect their loved ones.
“This is an emotional and sensitive issue, and we want to give every opportunity to relatives to come forward. That’s why we’re making sure the notice reaches every corner of the county,” said Kitwan.
The unclaimed bodies are currently being stored at two mortuaries: Kitui County Referral Hospital and Mwingi Level 4 Hospital. At Kitui County Referral Hospital, there are 11 unclaimed adult bodies and 25 foetuses. In Mwingi Level 4 Hospital, 21 unclaimed adult bodies remain unclaimed.
The notice serves as a legal requirement and a humanitarian appeal, especially for those who may have lost touch with loved ones. Members of the public are urged to check the notices and report to the respective mortuaries for any identification and claims.
