KNUT Urges Kitui Parents to Avoid School Closures Amid Grade 6 Exam Preparations”

The leadership of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) in Kitui County has urged parents to refrain from drastic actions such as chasing away school heads and closing schools, especially during the critical third term. This period is vital for Grade 6 students, who are preparing for exams to transition to junior secondary school. KNUT officials stressed the need to prioritize students’ learning and stability, warning that school closures could disrupt their academic progress at a crucial time.

Speaking to reporters, KNUT Kitui County Secretary, Simon Mutunga Nding’o, specifically addressed the recent closure of Kwa Ndonga Primary School in Matinyani, Kitui West Constituency. Parents had shut down the school and pulled their children out following disagreements with the school administration. Nding’o urged the parents to seek more constructive solutions, emphasizing that closing schools is not a sustainable or productive way to address issues within the education system. He called for government intervention to mediate and resolve such conflicts.

KNUT has also announced that it will hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, 12th October 2024, at the Kitui Multi-Purpose Hall. The meeting will be a platform to discuss teachers’ concerns, school leadership, and other critical education matters in Kitui County. The union’s Secretary General, Collins Henry Oyuu, will be the chief guest at the event.

This year’s AGM will focus on the theme, “Securing Teachers’ Rights and Enhancing Job Satisfaction,” reflecting the union’s commitment to advocating for the welfare of educators. With the ongoing challenges in schools, KNUT aims to push for better working conditions and address issues that hinder the smooth running of schools, all while ensuring that students’ educational needs are met.
