The residents of Kyoani in Kitui South have commended the county government of Kitui and the event’s organizing team, led by former Kitui South MP Hon. Mwangu Ivuti, Chief Officers Franciscan Kyui and Gladys Kivoto, and Kitui South Sub-County Administrator Madam Ngalai, for successfully planning the memorial service for six schoolchildren who tragically lost their lives in a road accident last week.
The event, held at Kyoani playground, drew a large crowd of mourners, who came to pay their last respects to the departed young souls.
During the solemn mass, Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe addressed the gathering and urged the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to implement stronger road safety measures to prevent future tragedies. He emphasized the need for drivers to exercise greater caution, particularly in school zones, and called for collaborative efforts to ensure the safety of all road users.
His message resonated deeply with the grieving community, who are still grappling with the sudden loss of their children.
The service was attended by key national and county leaders, including County Commissioner Kipchumba Rutto, Senator Kiio Wambua, Ex CS Penina Malonza and MPs Dr. Rachael Nyamai (Kitui South) and Kitui county Mp Dr. Irene Kasalu. A representative from the Cabinet Secretary for Education also attended, showing solidarity with the bereaved families. Several MCAs, senior county government officials, and members of the clergy also joined in the prayers and mourning, offering their support to the families affected by the tragedy.
The tragic loss of these young lives has reignited discussions on road safety, particularly in rural areas where speeding and poor road conditions are rampant. Local leaders vowed to follow up on Governor Malombe’s call for KeNHA to take immediate action in improving road infrastructure and ensuring that such accidents are avoided in the future.
