The County Assembly of Kitui has received strong backing from key leaders who have called for respect for its decisions and independence in the governance of Kitui County. During a homecoming and thanksgiving ceremony for Hon. Harrison Maluki Mawia, the Majority Party Leader and Migwani Ward MCA, held at Mumbuni Primary School grounds in Mwingi West, local leaders emphasized the importance of safeguarding the Assembly’s autonomy.
Mwingi West MP Charles Nguna led the call, urging leaders to respect both the County Assembly and the Executive for peaceful coexistence. “The Speaker of the County Assembly, Kevin Kinengo Katisya, must be respected, just as we respect the Governor, Dr. Julius Malombe. Attacks on the Assembly are unacceptable, and we stand with the Speaker to lead until 2027,” said Nguna.
Echoing Nguna’s sentiments, Kitui Central MP Dr. Makali Mulu reaffirmed the role of national legislators in supporting County Assemblies to ensure their efficiency. He highlighted the importance of financial autonomy for County Assemblies, a measure he believes will shield them from undue influence by the Executive. “We, as MPs, have witnessed the dangers of being swallowed by the Executive. It’s crucial that the County Assembly remains independent to protect the people’s interests. Compromised assemblies fail the public, and we don’t want that for Kitui,” Makali stated, urging vigilance against undue control.
Speaker Kevin Kinengo Katisya reinforced the Assembly’s commitment to its mandate, pledging to act independently and in the best interests of Kitui residents. Speaking at the event, he assured the public of his unwavering resolve to deliver meaningful oversight and development. “The County Assembly will not be reduced to a rubber stamp. We will remain steadfast in serving the people, ensuring transparency and accountability in governance,” said Kinengo, commending Hon. Harrison Maluki for his leadership and reaffirming his support for the Majority Leader’s work in Migwani.
The event underscored the unity among Kitui leaders in advocating for respect for institutional frameworks within the County Government. It also highlighted their resolve to protect the Assembly’s independence as a critical component of good governance. Both MPs and the Speaker stressed the importance of a collaborative yet distinct relationship between the County Assembly and the Executive, emphasizing that undermining one arm of government could derail the county’s progress.
Hon. Harrison Maluki, the host of the event, expressed gratitude to his constituents and fellow leaders for their trust and support. He assured the residents of Migwani Ward of his dedication to delivering development and effective representation. “I am humbled by the faith you have placed in me, and I commit to working tirelessly to meet your expectations,” he said. Maluki also noted the need for continued collaboration among leaders to foster unity and growth in Kitui County.
The call for mutual respect between the Assembly and the Executive comes at a time when governance in Kitui faces scrutiny and public demand for better service delivery. The leaders’ collective stance signals a shift towards reinforcing institutional integrity and ensuring that the County Assembly remains a robust arm of governance that can effectively advocate for the needs of Kitui residents.
