Kitui Central lawmaker Dr. Makali Mulu has commended Kitui County residents for turning out in large numbers to express their views on the potential impeachment of Deputy President Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua. He noted that Kenyans have highlighted pressing national issues, such as the proposed leasing of JKIA to the Indian conglomerate Adani Group, the SHIF and SHA healthcare reforms, the university funding model, and rampant joblessness.
These concerns, according to Dr. Mulu, are far more urgent and deserve attention before considering an impeachment motion.
Dr. Mulu expressed his disappointment that the National Government-Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) accounts have yet to be funded, while money is reportedly being distributed to Members of Parliament to mobilize support for the impeachment. He questioned the priorities of the government, wondering why resources are being used for political maneuvering instead of addressing critical issues like funding for development projects and the welfare of ordinary Kenyans.
Addressing the impeachment motion, Dr. Mulu made it clear that in his opinion, both the Deputy President and the President should be held accountable if such action is taken. Using the analogy “Kufa Makanga Kufa Dereva” (if the conductor dies, so does the driver), he argued that impeaching only one leader would be unjust and that the entire government should be evaluated for its performance. His remarks reflected his belief that the impeachment could lead to political instability, further hampering service delivery.
Dr. Mulu also emphasized that the Kenya Kwanza government should focus on fulfilling its manifesto, as Kenyans are eager for tangible results. He warned that impeaching the Deputy President at this stage would distract from the government’s primary responsibilities and result in a loss of crucial development time, potentially leaving Kenyans to suffer for five more years. In his view, political squabbles should take a back seat to addressing the real challenges facing the nation.
