Mwingi West MP Charles Nguna (CNN) has defended his decision to work closely with President William Ruto’s administration, saying his move is motivated purely by the need to fast-track development projects in his constituency.
Hon CNN a second-term lawmaker elected on a Wiper Patriotic Front ticket, said his cooperation with the government does not amount to defection but a pragmatic step to ensure his constituents benefit from national programmes. “I have chosen to collaborate with the government for the sake of my people. Development can only come when we engage those in power constructively,” he said.
Speaking to HopkinDigital.com, the MP declared that he will not be intimidated by party politics and is ready to defend his seat on any party ticket if Wiper denies him the chance to run in 2027. “If Wiper refuses to give me a ticket, I will defend my seat on any other party that believes in service delivery and development,” he told our reporter.
The lawmaker revealed that during his recent visit to State House, he secured a major breakthrough for his constituency, with more than 3,400 households in Mwingi West now set to be connected to electricity under the national rural electrification programme. He said the agreement marked a significant milestone in his efforts to expand access to power and spur economic growth in the region.
CNN added that Mwingi West has long suffered from stalled and neglected projects, including the Kwasiku–Mbondoni road, Thitani Technical Institute, colonial dams and several electrification schemes. “By working with the President, we are unlocking resources that had been stuck for years. My goal is to see these projects completed and serving the people,” he said.
The legislator also defended his decision to support the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, arguing that the move was guided by the interests of Ukambani residents. “I voted for Gachagua’s removal because he never supported development in our region but central region. Many projects stalled and we were sidelined in government planning,” he said.
Hon. Nguna further accused sections of the Wiper leadership of targeting him for taking independent positions, saying the party has become intolerant to divergent opinions. “When you choose to put your people first, they brand you a rebel. But I will not allow political bitterness to hold back Mwingi West,” he said, adding that he still respects and remains thankful to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
He reiterated that his focus is on delivering tangible results and empowering local communities rather than engaging in partisan politics. “I respect Kalonzo for his leadership, but politics must serve the people. My constituents elected me to deliver, and that is exactly what I am doing,” he said, hinting that his future political direction ahead of 2027 will be guided by development outcomes and the will of the people.
