On Thursday, July 18, 2024, Kitui East MP Hon Nimrod Mbithuka Mbai set the county ablaze with a series of incendiary statements that unleashed a torrent of outrage and fury across social media.

In a daring post on the Kitui Professional Chat (KPC), a high-profile group teeming with the county’s elite, Mbai ruthlessly insulted his Voo/Kyamatu voters, branding them as “fools.” The venomous remark spread like wildfire, triggering a maelstrom of sneers, vitriol, and vicious attacks from all corners of the digital landscape.

Mbai didn’t stop there. He brazenly declared himself the “Patron of goons and hooligans in Kitui County,” reveling in his infamy. “I am the Patron of goons in Kitui County, but I won’t allow my children to be goons,” Mbai boasted, his words dripping with defiance.

To add to the shock, he revealed that his home was under the watchful eye of a private militia led by the formidable Mutito/Kaliku MCA Aaron Kasele, whom he dubbed the “General.” This chilling disclosure sent shivers through the community, raising alarming questions about the true nature of leadership and security in the Kitui East.

The scandalous lawmaker was already in hot water earlier in July 2023 for a violent confrontation with a Kenya Power engineer who was reportedly seeking to disconnect an illegal power line at Mbai’s home in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

In a viral video, the MP was seen hurling insults at the Kenya Power officers before repeatedly slapping one of them. The video also showed Mbai reaching for and attempting to draw his gun during his fit of rage, further tarnishing his reputation and painting a disturbing picture of his conduct.

The backlash from Mbai’s constituents was swift and merciless. One incensed voter did not mince words, lambasting the MP for his brazen admission. “How do you expect people to respect any leader who publicly confirms he is a goon and master of goons? That is contrary to Chapter 6 of the constitution on leadership. It’s most unfortunate coming from honorable member⁩. He should retract that statement. I didn’t elect a goon but a Mheshimiwa! If he has metamorphosed into one, then it’s time to pack up and quit that honorable job.” The electorate’s fury was palpable, a stark rebuke to Mbai’s reckless rhetoric.

As the scandal continued to unravel, the demands for Mbai to retract his inflammatory statements grew louder and more insistent. Critics lambasted his comments as a gross violation of the principles of leadership and integrity, arguing that they had severely tarnished his reputation and eroded the trust of his voters. The saga has become a searing reminder of the destructive power of words and the perilous consequences they can have, particularly when uttered by those in positions of authority.

The county now waits with bated breath to see if Mbai will bow to the pressure and apologize, or if he will defiantly stand by his contentious remarks, further fanning the flames of controversy.
