Kitui Metrological department Boss Daniel Mbithi has advised farmers to use certified seeds from reputed sources (agro dealers) and encouraged farmers to have their soil tested for proper farm decisions on fertility management.
According to the Met Mr Mbithi Farmers should harvest water and plant crops which do not require a lot of rainfall like; Millet ( Mwee), Dolichos (Mbumbu), Cowpeas (Nzooko), Green Grams ( Ndengu), Sorghum ( Muvya) and Pigeon Peas (Nzuu).
Speaking exclusively with Hopkin Reporter, a day after World meteorological day, a day which is commemorated on 23rd March every year unveiled that “As Metrological department we advice farmers to avoid crops like maizes and beans try and grow sorghum because it has high demands by brewery Companies”
Kenya Met has divided Kitui county into three different zones.
1. Lower zone wards are expected to receive between 80 to 200mm.These wards includes Tseikuru, ngomeni, Endau/Malalani, Nuu, Nguni, Mutha, Voo/Kyamatu, Zombe/Mwitika, Ikanga/Kyatune, Mutomo/Kibwea, Kanganyi, Kisasi, Kanziko/Simisi, Ikutha, Athi, Nguutani, Kyuso.
2. The Middle zone expects average rainfall between (200 to 300mm) and the wards includes Tharaka, Waita, Kivou, Mwingi central, Mui, Kiomo/Kyethani, Kyoome/Thaana, Migwani, Matinyani, Kwa Mutonga, Miambani, Mulango, Mbitini, Nzambani, Chuluni, Kyangwithya East, Kyangwithya West, Yatta/Kwa Vonza and Mutitu Kaliku.
3. Upper Zone wards expects heavy rainfall between (300 to 400 mm) and they includes; Mumoni, Mutonguni, Kauwi and Kitui Township.
