On Friday, 22nd March 2024, a landmark partnership was announced between the National Government and the County Government of Kitui. The collaboration aims to construct a new campus for Utalii College and establish a Rhino sanctuary in Kitui South.
Governor Malombe confirmed that the county has generously provided land for this ambitious project, situating it near the Kenya Water Institute (KEWI). This strategic location promises easy access and synergies with existing wildlife and tourism educational facilities.
The announcement was made by the CS for Tourism and Wildlife, Dr. Alfred Mutua, following a productive meeting with Governor Dr. Malombe in Kitui. Dr. Mutua expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to bolster tourism and conservation efforts in the region.
The new Utalii College campus is expected to offer specialized courses in wildlife management, hospitality, and tourism, tapping into Kitui’s rich biodiversity and tourism potential. Simultaneously, the Rhino sanctuary will contribute to wildlife conservation, providing a safe haven for these endangered creatures and promoting eco-tourism in Kitui.
This collaborative endeavor signifies a significant step forward in harnessing the synergies between education, tourism, and conservation, paving the way for sustainable development and prosperity in Kitui County.
