Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli, the party leader of the National Liberal Party, has vehemently condemned the unwarranted arrests and use of teargas by police officers during a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

In a press statement seen by Hopkin Digital Media, the National Liberal Party underscored that the right to picket and express opposition to government policies is enshrined in the Constitution, labeling the police actions as a severe violation of democratic rights.

The National Liberal Party’s statement highlighted that the protest was a collective effort by Kenyans to voice their dissent against the proposed draconian finance bill. The peaceful demonstration in Nairobi was intended to be a platform for citizens to exercise their constitutional rights.

However, the demonstrators were met with excessive force, leading to numerous unwarranted arrests and the dispersal of crowds using teargas. The party’s leadership condemned these actions, emphasizing the need for the government to respect the constitutional freedoms of its citizens.

Dr. Muli reiterated that every Kenyan has a fundamental right to resist any form of suppression, whether economic or otherwise. He pointed out that the right to assemble and protest is a critical aspect of the nation’s democratic framework.

The aggressive actions taken by the police were described as a blatant violation of these rights, with Dr. Muli insisting that such measures cannot be justified under any circumstances. The party’s stance is that the government must be held accountable for its actions.

In his address, Dr. Muli called for the immediate and unconditional release of all those arrested during the protest. He stressed that the government and its security forces must honor the rights of citizens to express their views freely and without intimidation.

The National Liberal Party demands that the government take immediate steps to rectify the situation and ensure that such violations do not recur in the future.

The National Liberal Party affirmed its solidarity with all Kenyans striving to protect their economic freedoms and resist oppressive policies. Dr. Muli assured the public that the party would continue to advocate for the rights of all citizens and hold the government accountable for any actions undermining democratic principles.

The party is committed to ensuring that the voices of the people are heard and respected, reinforcing the importance of upholding the country’s democratic values.
