National Delegates Conference of the National Liberal Party, led by Kyalo Muli, was a significant disappointment, with a turnout that failed to meet expectations. Despite the extensive online hype, the event saw only a few attendees, leading to widespread criticism of Muli’s inability to mobilize local support.
Photographs circulating on WhatsApp groups highlighted the dismal attendance, with many empty seats and only Muli, Francis Kauta, and an unidentified woman seated at the front. The poor turnout left Muli, who often presents himself as a successful Dubai business mogul, in a state of shock and disbelief. This was not the first time Muli faced such a setback.
Earlier, he experienced a similar boycott during a tree-planting drive organized by the Kamba Visionaries Association (KVA) in Kitui Central wards. KVA members accused Muli of being prideful and attempting to hijack their event. Additionally, attendees at his home were reportedly not provided with meals, further tarnishing his reputation.
The failed delegates conference and the previous boycott underscore the growing dissatisfaction with Muli’s leadership style and approach. The conference, initially intended to take place at Muli’s venue known as “The Woods,” was overshadowed by a court order issued under unclear circumstances, leading to further disarray.
The event eventually devolved into an alcohol celebration, highlighting the lack of serious political engagement. The National Liberal Party, which currently holds no elected positions in Kenya, faced a major blow as the event’s failure revealed the local population’s apathy towards Muli’s political aspirations.
Kyalo Muli’s allies, speaking to our reporter, blamed Muli and his mobilization team for the poor turnout. They disclosed that gospel artist Stephen Kasolo, who was paid to attract more people to the event, was shocked to find himself singing to only a handful of attendees. This revelation underscores the disorganization and lack of effective planning that plagued the event, further damaging Muli’s credibility.
Additionally, there are allegations that Muli organized goons with his financiers to disrupt the show, and rumors suggest he even fueled a pickup with a sound system and goons to occupy Governor Malombe’s administration block, but this attempt failed miserably. As Kyalo Muli prepares for his bid for the Kitui Central MP seat in the 2027 general elections, the debacle at “The Woods” serves as a stark reminder of the significant challenges he faces.
The failed conference and previous controversies highlight the need for Muli to address the growing discontent and to genuinely engage with the local populace if he hopes to build a successful political career in Kitui and beyond.
