NCCK Distributes 50,000 Cassava Seedlings to 500 Farmers in Athi Ward

Farmers in Athi Ward have received a significant boost as the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) distributed over 50,000 cassava seedlings to 500 farmers to support agricultural production during the ongoing rainy season. This initiative aims to promote cassava as a resilient alternative crop capable of thriving in diverse conditions, including arid and semi-arid areas. At a time when farmers are seeking sustainable solutions, this move offers a pathway to enhanced food security and improved livelihoods.

Stephen Kiteme, an NCCK trainer is advocating for cassava cultivation due to its resilience and minimal input requirements. Unlike other crops that demand costly fertilizers and intensive care, cassava is relatively easy to grow, making it accessible to small-scale farmers. By adopting this drought-resistant crop, farmers in Athi Ward can ensure a stable food supply while also benefiting from additional income through surplus sales.

The distribution of improved cassava varieties aligns with the government’s broader agenda of enhancing food security by promoting crops that can withstand changing climate conditions. With Kenya facing unpredictable weather patterns, cassava presents a viable alternative to traditional staples that are more vulnerable to drought. By providing farmers with high-quality seedlings, NCCK is playing a key role in strengthening agricultural resilience in the region.

This initiative is expected to bring notable socio-economic benefits to the people of Athi Ward. Increased cassava production will bolster household food security, reducing dependence on expensive market supplies. Furthermore, surplus produce can be sold, allowing farmers to generate income to support their families. As cassava farming gains traction, it has the potential to drive long-term economic growth and foster greater self-sufficiency within the community.
