The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has donated over 50,000 tree seedlings, including fruit and indigenous species, to the residents of Athi Ward. The initiative aims to combat desertification and restore greenery in the region, which has faced severe environmental degradation due to excessive tree-cutting and sand harvesting. Speaking during the launch, group leader Andrew Nyamu highlighted the importance of unity in tackling environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development.

Residents of Athi Ward expressed their deep appreciation to NCCK for the generous donation. They committed to planting the seedlings in various locations across the ward and ensuring their proper care and maintenance. This effort aims not only to prevent further deforestation but also to beautify the region and boost the local economy. By cultivating fruit trees, residents expect to generate income and enhance food security in the long term.

The initiative also emphasizes protecting all tree species, including indigenous, fruit, and shade trees, while advocating for environmental conservation. To ensure the program’s success, environmental experts will provide the community with guidance on best practices for nurturing the trees. This approach is critical in reversing the effects of deforestation and creating a sustainable environment for future generations.

This effort supports Kenya’s ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2030 to address climate change and restore the nation’s forest cover. The Athi Ward project exemplifies how local communities can actively contribute to national environmental goals while improving their livelihoods and promoting sustainability.
