Over 100 families have something to smile about after former Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza distributed water tanks to various women groups in Kitui County.
This marks the second phase of her water tank distribution initiative, aimed at addressing the region’s persistent water scarcity. The project is expected to ease the burden on women who often walk long distances in search of water by enabling them to harvest and store rainwater for domestic use.
Speaking on Thursday at Kwa Vonza Chief’s Camp, where she handed over 20 tanks, Malonza reaffirmed her commitment to tackling Kitui’s perennial water crisis in a sustainable manner. She emphasized the urgency of the distribution ahead of the April rainy season, ensuring that families could take full advantage of the rains to store water for future use.
Malonza also stressed the importance of organized community structures, stating that the water tanks would only be allocated to registered self-help groups. She encouraged those who were not yet part of such groups to join, as it would improve their chances of benefiting from future development projects. This approach, she noted, ensures efficient distribution and accountability.
The initiative has been well received, with beneficiaries expressing gratitude for the much-needed support. As climate change continues to impact rainfall patterns, rainwater harvesting offers a reliable solution to water shortages. Malonza’s efforts highlight her ongoing dedication to community development and women’s empowerment, ensuring that families in Kitui have access to clean and sustainable water sources.
