Phase 1 of Ksh13M Inclusion Grant Wraps Up, Empowering Farmers’ Saccos in Kitui

192

The first phase of the National Agricultural and Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP) inclusion grant has successfully concluded today, Wednesday, September 18th, 2024.

Team A visited Kisasi and Mbitini, while Team B toured Kyangwithya West, Kyangwithya East, and Miambani wards, marking a significant milestone in supporting farmers’ savings and credit cooperatives (Saccos) across Kitui County. This initiative is designed to empower Saccos in all 40 wards, providing essential financial support to boost their operations and enhance agricultural productivity.

The first phase of the grant, worth Ksh13 million, targets 20 wards and is focused on establishing Sacco offices and covering initial operational costs. The funds will assist Saccos in paying for office rent, stipends for bookkeepers, internet services, and API services.

Additionally, the grant will cover costs for stationery, office furniture, computers, and other essential resources, ensuring the smooth running of the cooperatives. Farmers are expected to benefit significantly from the improved Sacco operations, allowing them better access to agricultural services.

In Kyangwithya East, a representative from the Kitui Ministry of Agriculture addressed the local farmers’ Sacco, emphasizing the importance of proving the recruitment of new members to earn a mobilization fee. The initiative, described as a “game changer,” is expected to ease Sacco operations and promote financial inclusion.

Farmers were also encouraged to save more with their respective Saccos to access larger loans that could help them develop their businesses and farms.

The NAVCDP’s inclusion grant is part of a broader strategy to promote value chain development and support local agricultural productivity. By strengthening the role of Saccos in the community, the project aims to boost local economies and help farmers access the financial services they need. This initiative aligns with Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s development plan, which prioritizes agricultural development and food security across Kitui County.

The second phase of the grant is set to be rolled out in the remaining 20 wards, further expanding its impact. The next phase will continue to support farmers and Saccos, enhancing food security and empowering local economies through agricultural growth.
