Planned Free Medical Camp in Kitui Canceled Amid Political Controversy

725

The free medical camp organized by M-Pesa Foundation , powered by Zuri Health which was scheduled for Saturday, 8th February 2025, at Kitui Stadium, has been abruptly canceled.

The cancellation has sparked mixed reactions among residents, as the initiative was expected to offer essential healthcare services, including general doctor consultations, women’s health checkups, breast cancer screening, eye care, and dental screenings.

Some speculate that political motives were behind the camp, as it was allegedly facilitated by Nicolas Mulila, a gubernatorial aspirant, possibly as a strategy to gain popularity ahead of the 2027 elections.

Additionally, concerns have been raised about the camp’s location, which was set just a few meters from Kitui County Referral Hospital. Some argue that if the initiative were truly meant to help residents, it should have been held in remote areas with limited access to healthcare.

Critics claim that its location in Kitui town exposes the political ambitions of Nicolas Mulila and could be seen as an attempt to undermine Governor Malombe’s leadership. With the cancellation, many residents who were looking forward to the free medical services have been left disappointed.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, under the leadership of Waziri Ruth Koki, is conducting countywide Beyond Zero Mobile Clinics integrated outreach services. Through the Department of Public Health and Sanitation, the initiative aims to bring essential healthcare services closer to communities, particularly in underserved areas.

The outreach program, which began last week, is being implemented across four sub-counties: Kitui Rural, Kitui East, Mwingi Central, and Mwingi North. These mobile clinics are designed to enhance access to healthcare and address various medical needs at the grassroots level. This comes as the Ministry of Health and Sanitation continues to conduct Beyond Zero Mobile Clinics integrated outreach services in the four sub-counties.

The integrated outreach services offer a wide range of medical interventions, ensuring holistic care for residents. Some of the key services provided include gender-based violence support, breast and cervical cancer screening, and essential pharmacy and laboratory services such as dispensing drugs and diabetes screening.

Additionally, antenatal and postnatal care, immunization services, family planning, health promotion, and screening for non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and mental health conditions are also available. This comprehensive approach ensures that multiple health needs are addressed in a single visit, improving health outcomes for the local population. By prioritizing these services, the county government aligns with Governor Malombe’s manifesto, which focuses on delivering quality healthcare to the people of Kitui County.
