If elections were held today, Nicholas Mulila, Safaricom’s Chief Corporate Security Officer responsible for Business Risk Management Strategy and Cyber Security, would likely emerge as Kitui’s next governor, according to recent straw poll predictions. Mulila currently leads the race with 37.68% support, positioning him as a potential successor to Governor Dr. Julius Malombe.

His rise has surprised many, as he outperforms established political figures like Kitui Central MP Dr. Makali Mulu, who garnered 25%, Kitui Senator Enoch Kiio Wambua who garnered 18.84% and former Governor Charity Ngilu, who trailed with 13.41%.

Mulila’s appeal extends beyond his corporate credentials to his track record of tangible development projects within Kitui County. He led Safaricom PLC, in partnership with the Kitui County government, to launch the MyCounty App, which has significantly improved access to government services, streamlined payments, and enhanced the county’s operational efficiency.

Additionally, through the Safaricom Foundation, Mulila spearheaded the donation of a high-level anesthesia machine worth Ksh 3.1 million to Ikutha Level Four Hospital in Kitui South, boosting healthcare delivery in the region.

In Kitui Central, Mulila, serving as the Board of Management chairman at St. Charles Lwanga School, played a key role in delivering a three-story dormitory block that comfortably accommodates over 800 students. His contributions also extend to faith-based initiatives, where he led fundraising efforts for the construction of a new church at Kavisuni Catholic Church and secured funds for completing several projects at Holy Family Kabati Parish.

As a former Board of Management chairman at Matinyani Boys, Mulila spearheaded a series of renovations, including constructing a tuition block, upgrading laboratories, and giving the school a much-needed facelift.

As the 2027 elections approach, Mulila’s blend of corporate leadership and community service sets him apart from traditional political figures. His hands-on approach and ability to deliver meaningful projects have resonated strongly with Kitui residents, signaling a shift toward new leadership.

With a proven track record of impactful initiatives across various sectors, Mulila could be the ideal candidate to build on Governor Malombe’s legacy and propel Kitui toward further development.
