As the county government embarks on construction of sand dams along seasonal rivers across all the 40 wards of Kitui, bee keepers, now have something to smile about David Musyoka, a bee keeper from Waita ward said his hundreds of bee hives have remained without bees for lack of a nearby source of water.
“After water is harvested in the sand dams, the bees will not leave the hives during dry season and this guarantee a bumper harvest, ” said Musyoka.
He said the area along Endui hills is highly known for bee keeping but the lucrative venture has since been adversely affected by prolonged drought.
“Following the prolonged drought where every water source dries up, the bees vacate the hives but with the availability of water of water from the dams, our hives will have the bees back,” he added.
Musyoka added that the business will sustain their families lauding the county government for the move to erect water projects to the locals.
“We urge the county government to embark on more water projects as promised as this will impact the lives of every local positively, ” he said.
Munyoki Mwanzia, another bee keeper said he had given up on bee Keeping but he will embark on the business after the construction of a sand dam on River Ndithi that will enable the bees have a nearby water point.
