Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has opined that former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i should sue the government for “wrongful detention and mistreatment” following his recent probe by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to Senator Maanzo, the probe on the ex-CS should be faulted on the government and the police system for treating him in an undignifying manner without having a concrete case against him.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s Daybreak show on Tuesday, Maanzo claimed that the entire fracas revealed a “misuse of state power and police to advance their political agenda””This entire thing has been an effort to frustrate him.
There was no case, it was pure malice and I think the state should apologise for that,” he said.”In fact, Matiang’i should sue the state for wrongful detention and mistreatment. He was detained for 8-10 hours, that was unlawful detention,” Maanzo added.
The Senator further noted that the state dropped the ball on handling the matter, arguing that if Matiang’i would have been assigned security from the onset, the case would not have occurred.
“A person at the level of Matiang’i who has handled security should have security at all material times, therefore, this story should have not arised,” he noted.
“This is somebody with very crucial information about the security of this country, he is not somebody you discard as soon as their term in government is over.”
On Monday, Matiang’i was freed from the possibility of being charged in court after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) said that the evidence provided by the DCI was not sufficient to sustain the said charges.
He was facing false publication of information charges, following an alleged police raid at his Karen home on February 8.
