Kitui County Assembly Speaker Kevin Kinengo Katisya has fiercely condemned unnamed individuals he describes as cartels interfering with the Assembly’s operations and leadership decisions.
In a bold statement shared on the Kitui Professionals Chat (KPC), a forum comprising influential figures from Kitui County, Speaker Kinengo accused these cartels of attempting to manipulate the Assembly’s leadership and committee compositions, roles that are strictly the prerogative of the Members of County Assembly (MCAs).
He decried these external forces, vowing to defend the autonomy of the Assembly against any form of interference.
Kinengo’s strong remarks come amidst significant leadership changes within the Kitui County Assembly. On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, Hon. Harrison Maluki Mawia (Migwani) and Hon. Bonface Mukwate Katula (Kanyangi) were installed as the new Leader of the Majority Party and Majority Party Whip, respectively.
They succeeded Hon. Munyoki Mwinzi (Kyuso) and Hon. Daniel Kimanzi Ngoima (Township), who previously held these key positions. Kinengo’s statement suggests that these changes could be part of a broader scheme by the cartels to control the Assembly and dictate its leadership structure, a move he vehemently opposes.
Speaker Kinengo accused these cartels of having a long-standing agenda to push certain leaders out of the Wiper Party, asserting that their efforts will ultimately fail.
He emphasized that he and other party members will continue to fight for their rightful place within Wiper, refusing to be intimidated or sidelined by power-hungry individuals. Drawing from his experience as the former Personal Assistant to the Wiper Party leader, Kinengo promised to expose the cartels’ schemes, insisting that democracy must prevail within the party.
Kinengo’s defiant stance has been widely praised as a courageous defense of democracy and the rule of law within the Assembly. His commitment to protecting the Assembly’s independence from external influences sets him apart as a leader dedicated to transparency and accountability.
