Fredrick Tito Mwamati, the Chief Executive Officer of Tanathi Water Works Development Agency, has been arrested in connection with a multimillion graft case. The case pertains to alleged irregularities and corruption in the construction of the Kinanie Leather Industrial Park Water Supply Project. The arrest was confirmed by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) spokesperson, Eric Ngumbi.
Mwamati’s arrest is part of a broader crackdown by the EACC on corruption within public institutions. He is being escorted to the Kitui Anti-Corruption Court today Tuesday, 25th June 2024, where he will take his plea alongside other top managers of the water agency. This marks a significant development in the EACC’s efforts to hold public officials accountable and curb corruption within government projects.
In a related operation that commenced yesterday evening, the EACC also apprehended three officials from the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). These officials are set to be charged at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court this morning. The simultaneous arrests highlight the EACC’s ongoing commitment to addressing graft in various public sectors, ensuring that those involved in corrupt activities face justice.
The arrest of Mwamati and the NSSF officials underscores the pervasive nature of corruption in Kenya’s public institutions and the challenges faced in promoting transparency and accountability. As these cases proceed through the courts, they will be closely watched as a measure of the effectiveness of Kenya’s anti-corruption efforts. The outcome of these proceedings may serve as a deterrent to others and reinforce the importance of integrity in public service.
