THREE CHOLERA DEATHS CONFIRMED IN KITUI COUNTY

Following the Cholera outbreak in Kitui County, Dr Faith Kanini Mutinda the Deputy Director Public Health has immediately notified all health workers and members of the public to watch out for patients presenting with watery diarrhoea of acute onset, conduct active search for acute watery diarrhoea in health facilities and within the communities for missed/unreported cases, strengthen surveillance activities up to the village level and ensure 100% case-based reporting, strengthen the involvement of laboratory personnel in disease surveillance for timely confirmation as well as ensure that all health workers are conversant with the case definition and are sensitized on potential cholera outbreak.” We are fully equiped as County Government Of Kitui and we are going to training health practitioners on cases investigation and cases management”, Madam Faith Mutinda said.

The

Public Health Officer urged Kitui County People to wash hands with soap and water regularly, especially after using the toilet and before preparing food or eating, only drink water that’s been boiled or bottled water and eat well cooked foods and avoid open air eateries to prevent further spreading of the outbreak.

Talking to Hopkindigital.com at her office madam Faith Mutinda unveiled that all cholera cases in Kitui County are imported from Nairobi and Kadongo in whereby only Three Constituencies so far are affected:

1. Mwingi North – 2 Cholera Cases and 2 deaths

2. Mwingi Central – 1 Cholera case

3. Kitui Rural – 2 Cases and 1 Death Seven Kisasi residents are treated and controlled at Kisasi Health Care after deliciously enjoyed a carcass.”The carcass should be buried at least 4 feet deep and avoid consuming it”, Madam Faith added.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Cholera is an extremely virulent disease which affects both children and adults and can kill within hours. People with low immunity – such as malnourished children or people living with HIV – are at a greater risk of death if infected.Cholera transmission is closely linked to inadequate environmental management. Typical at-risk areas include peri-urban slums, where basic infrastructure is not available, as well as camps for internally displaced people or refugees, where minimum requirements of clean water and sanitation are not met.
