Kitui town has experienced an unprecedented economic surge over the past three days from Thursday, July 25, 2024, to Saturday, July 27, 2024, thanks to the Kitui Agricultural Show and Trade Fair 2024. The event, held at the revamped Ithookwe Showground, attracted thousands of people from all walks of life. Enthusiastic showgoers, teeming like bees in a hive, brought a remarkable boost to the local economy, particularly benefiting businesses within the showground.
Bars and restaurants within Ithookwe grounds saw a massive influx of patrons, as visitors sought refreshments and meals during the event. Small vendors selling snacks, drinks, and souvenirs also reported brisk business, with many selling out their stock each day. The atmosphere was festive, with merry-go-rounds and bouncing castles providing entertainment for children and families, further driving up the number of visitors and spending.
Hotels, including those from nearby Kitui town, were fully booked as visitors sought accommodation close to the showground. Exhibitor stands were in high demand, with businesses showcasing a wide range of products and services.Â
The economic impact extended beyond the showground to the entire town. Supermarkets like Naivas Kitui were filled to capacity, and at one point, had to temporarily close in the afternoon due to overwhelming customer numbers. Fueling stations sold millions of liters of fuel, with the town and its outskirts resembling a bustling car bazaar. The high demand for transportation services also benefited boda boda (motorcycle taxi) operators, who enjoyed a surge in business.
Street vendors, including mama mbogas (vegetable sellers), mama matundas (fruit sellers), and mama pimas (alcohol sellers), experienced booming business as thousands of customers flocked to their stalls. This surge provided a significant boost to their incomes, enhancing the livelihoods of these hardworking women. The vibrant economic activity was a testament to the fair’s success in drawing large crowds and stimulating local commerce.
Over the three days, it is estimated that more than 10 million shillings circulated in Kitui town, rejuvenating the local economy. The money exchanged hands at various businesses, from small vendors to large hotels, creating a ripple effect of prosperity. Governor Malombe’s administration meticulously planned and executed the trade fair, much to the delight of county residents and visitors alike. The Kitui Agricultural Show and Trade Fair 2024 not only showcased the region’s agricultural potential but also underscored its ability to host large-scale events that drive significant economic growth.
