A cloud of grief has fallen over Epanja village in East Wanga Ward and Ebubere Secondary School in Mumias East Constituency, Kakamega County, following the sudden death of Calistus Wamboye Oteu, a 19-year-old KCSE candidate.

On Tuesday morning, Calistus left home in good health alongside his sibling, who is also sitting for the KCSE exams. However, tragedy struck when he reportedly collapsed and passed away in class as he awaited his turn to sit for the examination.

His family, led by parents Patrick and Dorcas Oteu, is devastated, having had high hopes for Calistus’s future. They are appealing for government support and assistance from well-wishers, noting that Calistus had shown no signs of illness before this unexpected event. His body has since been transferred to St. Mary’s Mission Hospital morgue in Mumias, where a post-mortem examination is expected to provide answers.

This tragedy comes as the KCSE exams enter their second day, casting a somber tone over what is typically a period of hope and anticipation. In another tragic incident, a male candidate in Tigania West, Meru County, passed away on Sunday, just hours before the exams began. Meru County Commissioner Jacob Ouma confirmed the death, though further details remain pending.
