The Vincent Munyoki Foundation, under the leadership of Dr. Vincent Munyoki, launched the ‘Tumbula na Vincent’ initiative aimed at improving agricultural productivity through the digging of water-holding terraces. This project seeks to equip communities with the knowledge and resources to implement sustainable farming practices that will enhance soil retention and improve crop yields.

The initiative, which began on 21st September 2024 in Kathivo, Kitui West, focuses on supporting vulnerable families by providing them with the tools needed to transform their farms into productive land. Dr. Munyoki expressed his commitment to expanding the program to other areas, encouraging farmers to embrace these practices to secure their livelihoods.

Water-holding terraces are essential in addressing the challenges of soil erosion and poor water retention, particularly in areas like Kitui, which often face harsh weather conditions. Dr. Munyoki emphasized the need for both the national and local governments to back the ‘Tumbula initiative,’ ensuring that every farm in the region is equipped with terraces to capture rainwater.

By doing so, farmers can prevent the loss of valuable topsoil and maximize the benefits of the seasonal rains, which will ultimately lead to increased food production and better economic outcomes for the communities involved.

Farmers like Annah Muli Mutua from Kwandila village in Kathivo sub-location have already benefited from the initiative. For years, Annah’s farm yielded little due to constant soil erosion and poor water retention. With the assistance of the Vincent Munyoki Foundation, she became the first local beneficiary, witnessing firsthand the transformative power of water-holding terraces.

The initiative is set to spread to other vulnerable homesteads before the December rains, with local administrators being called upon to identify families in need and ensure the program reaches as many people as possible.

The area Chief expressed gratitude to the Vincent Munyoki Foundation for their support and urged the community to embrace this life-changing initiative. He encouraged local farmers to start digging terraces in preparation for the rains, recommending that they dedicate time each day to ensure the work is completed before the rains arrive.

This approach will not only boost food production but will also contribute to the long-term goal of eradicating hunger by enhancing the sustainability of farming practices in the region.
