The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands and Urban Development, Fredrick Kimanga, has announced that the County Government of Kitui is offering a 100% waiver on interest and penalties accrued from unpaid land rates. This move, which is part of a larger revenue mobilization effort spearheaded by H.E. Dr. Julius M. Malombe, EGH, Governor of Kitui County, is intended to motivate compliance among land and plot owners. It aims to ease the financial burden on property holders while improving revenue collection for development purposes.
According to the Ministry of Lands and Urban Planning, the waiver will be effective until June 30, 2025. Landowners who have defaulted on their land rate obligations are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this limited-time opportunity by paying their outstanding principal amounts within the given timeframe. The county hopes that this gesture will improve public cooperation and bring more properties into compliance.
To benefit from the waiver, property owners must present themselves at the County Revenue Offices located in either Kitui or Mwingi Municipalities, depending on the location of their land. They are required to carry valid land ownership documents as well as the latest payment slips to facilitate billing. Upon verification, bills and invoices for the principal amount will be issued for settlement without the additional burden of interest or penalties.
However, the county government has made it clear that failure to act within the waiver period will lead to enforcement actions against defaulters. CECM Kimanga emphasized the importance of this initiative in supporting Kitui’s broader development agenda, stating, “This waiver offers a crucial relief to property owners and is part of our broader strategy to enhance revenue collection and promote development across Kitui.”
