Waziri Phoebe Mutemi Graced The Launch of Free Public WiFi in Kitui Town

Kitui CECM for Culture, Gender, Youth, Sports, ICT and Social services Phoebe Mutemi on Friday, 1st September 2023, graced the launch of Free Wi- fi hotspot in Kitui town.

The launch is part of the Digital Acceleration Program to extend internet to remote areas as outlined in the Kenya National Digital Masterpiece 2022- 2032, The National ICT Policy (2020) and the Digital Economy Blue Print (2019).

Speaking at the event, ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo said the public wifi hotspots are part of the National Government digitalization plan to set up 2500 free Wi- fi hotspots to help the youth and market traders to engage in e- commerce.

“These Wi- fi hotspots are part of the National Governments digitalization plan to help those at the bottom of the economic Pyramid to access the internet and engage in e – Commerce” said the CS.

On her Part Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage CS Peninah Malonza said the free Wi- fi service will help to market the county’s tourism sites globally alongside helping business people and citizens to trade with each other through online marketing.

While speaking at the launch Ms.Phoebe Mutemi, who represented Governor Malombe urged the youth to take advantage of the free wifi initiative to tap into the digital world to earn income.” In this Digital era, it is very necessary for one to make a living through the internet” said the CECM.

In Kitui County, the free wifi hotspots have been installed in Central Primary school and Chiefs office ( Mjini) in Kitui town, Kitui South’s Mutomo market and in Mwingi central CDF offices.
