Kitui County Executive Committee Member for Gender, Youth, ICT, Sports, and Social Services, Phoebe Mutemi, has officially launched the distribution of assistive devices to persons with disabilities (PWDs) across the county. Speaking during the launch event, Mutemi urged all PWDs to register and acquire disability certificates, which are necessary for enrollment into the Social Health Authority (SHA) program. She emphasized that having the certificate will enable PWDs to access quality healthcare services and other targeted support from both the county and national governments.

Waziri Phoebe further appealed to the public to stop the culture of hiding persons with disabilities, stressing the need to embrace inclusivity and equal opportunities for all. “PWDs are part of our society and deserve to live with dignity and support. Hiding them denies them their rights,” she said. The launch marked a key step in Kitui’s effort to empower the disability community and ensure no one is left behind in development.

During the launch event,  PWDs received assistive devices to aid in their mobility, and it was announced that the distribution will be rolled out to all sub-counties in the coming weeks. In addition to the individual support, the county government also donated  tents and chairs. All eight organized PWD groups in Kitui county will receive a tent and 100 chair to promote their social and economic empowerment, especially in income-generating and community activities.

Matinyani MCA Hon Sylvester Kitheka alias Yaamu and Nominated MCA Charity Musyoka, who attended the launch, lauded Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s administration for prioritizing the welfare of persons with disabilities. The MCAs thanked the county leadership for making mobility easier for PWDs and enabling them to participate more fully in social life. The county lawmaker Hon Charity emphasized that such initiatives are not only uplifting the lives of the vulnerable but also promoting a more inclusive and caring society in Kitui County.
